Canadian Special Olympics National Coaching Certification Program

Level 1 Technical

The mandate of Canadian Special Olympics is to provide sport training and competition for people with a mental disability. The successful realization of this goal is, in a large part, dependent on the coach. The commitment of a coach which results in weekly programs, is the foundation upon which all else is built.

The Level 1 Canadian Special Olympics Technical Course is designed to assist coaches in preparing and running their programs. The following provides a brief overview of the information that is covered:

Chapter 1: Special Olympics in Canada

Chapter 2: Mental Handicaps

Chapter 3: Coach's Role

Chapter 4: Basic Motor Skills

Chapter 5: Task Analysis

Chapter 6: Fitness and Fitness Testing

Chapter 7: The Gym Session

Chapter 8: Behavior Management

Chapter 9: Program Selection

The intention is to provide information as it pertains to coaching athletes who have a mental disability.

The Canadian Special Olympics National Coaching Certification Programs Technical Level 1 is but one aspect of a full range of coaching development courses offered by the National Coaching Certification Program. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that each coach compliment this course with the National Coaching Certification Program's Theory 1 and Technical level one; which corresponds with the sport each is coaching.
